Hello,
There's just a few weeks left of spring league, but we have lots of awesome things coming up! Don't miss out!
Extending spring league one week
Because we had to cancel the May 10 league night due to the swamp that was the arena that night (leading to dangerous wet ice), we will now finish league on June 7.
Games that were supposed to be played May 10 will now be played June 7. The same goes for byes.
This also means we have to move our annual planning meeting to June 6 (more on that below).
Highlights from our Olympic season push
Even with the U.S. National Curling Championships being canceled in Cedar Rapids, it was a wild, busy winter. We used the Winter Olympics to make a massive push to spread awareness of curling in the Corridor and give people a chance to try it. We couldn't have done any of it without you all!
Here are just a few of the things we have to celebrate by the numbers:
- 550: The number of people we got on the ice to try curling
- 15: The number of events we hosted (10 learn-to-curls, 3 corporate events, 2 watch parties)
- 43: The number of club members who volunteered for 226 volunteer spots
- 24: The number of people who volunteered 5 or more times, earning a gift certificate to Union Station
- 2: The number of billboards we had on local, busy roads in Coralville and Cedar Rapids
- 38,000: The reach that our Curling 101 graphics series had on Facebook, including 260 shares and a dozen clubs across the country and in Canada asking to use them (and translate into French)
- 8: Media spots, including print, radio, and TV
We will draw winners for the volunteer raffle prizes (free league and Steve's Curling gift cards) and have the Union Station gift cards at the member picnic (more information below).
CedarSpiel 2022 canceled
Due to high ice and food costs, we are unfortunately not able to host CedarSpiel this summer. We hope to return in 2023.
Help us plan for next season's leagues, LTCs, and more
Have thoughts or questions about when, what kind, and how long our leagues, learn to curls, and other events will be for the next year? Well, this will be your time to share your ideas about what our schedule looks like—or just listen in on the planning process.
We will host a 2022-23 season planning meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 6, via Zoom. (Tote the change from June 7 due to league being extended.) Register on the website to receive the Zoom link.
CRC + CR Pride
We are excited to join CR Pride in celebrating "30 Years of Pride." Cedar Rapids Curling will have a booth from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the July 9 festival at NewBo City Market. We will have a tent with a table full of curling items for people to check out, balloons for the kids (and adults), and hopefully our street curling set so people can "throw a stone."
We're looking for people to staff the table over a couple shifts--or whenever you can make it. It will be a great time hanging out together and sharing our sport with our community outside the ice!
Fun fact: Our very own Cedar Rapids Curling board member Drew Powell is also on the board for CR Pride!
Get ready to vote for your Board of Directors
Six two-year positions on the Board of Directors are up for election this summer by the general membership. The Board meets once a month and establishes policies, appoints officers and committee chairs, and sets goals to accomplish Cedar Rapids Curling’s mission.
Joining the board is a great opportunity to serve and help guide the club through the exciting growth that we expect to experience in the next few years. Significant curling skill or experience is not required, and having a few newer members actually is desirable.
For more information about what is involved, ask any current board member. You can learn more about the current board members here.
To nominate yourself or another CRC member, email Phil Burian (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) by July 4.
Members will receive an email with a link to vote for board members on July 11. Voting is anonymous and will remain open until July 25. New members will be announced at the July 31 picnic.
Celebrate with a picnic
We have much to celebrate! Please join us for our Member Meeting & Picnic at noon July 31 at at Hawks Ridge Park in Fairfax (390 W. Prairie Dr., Fairfax, IA, 52228).
Bring your family and significant others! Cedar Rapids Curling will provide the hamburgers, brats, buns, and utensils. We ask that you bring an appetizer, side, dish, or dessert to share. After eating and catching up, we will have a short member meeting to share club status and plans and announce the new Board of Directors.
