Private Curling Event

Cedar Rapids Curling would love to host your next party or teambuilding event

If you’re looking to throw a unique party or plan the ultimate team-building experience, curling may be exactly what you’re looking for. This is a real team sport, one that requires strategy and good communication between team members. It’s also a ton of fun, providing an experience your friends and coworkers will never forget.

In 90 minutes, your friends, colleagues and clients can learn the basics of the sport and feel like Olympians. No curling experience or special equipment is necessary, and we can develop a customized format to suit your particular group’s needs.

We curl in a multi-use ice arena, and we need at least four weeks’ notice to book your event and schedule volunteers to instruct your group. The more advanced notice you can give us, the better chance you’ll get the day and time you request. Booking group events in the weekday evening during the height of hockey season can be difficult, but afternoon group events are more easily scheduled.

We are currently unable to schedule any additional private events.  Please let us know if you've future interest, and we'll be in touch once scheduling is feasible!

Get started by filling out our group event form

Group sizes and pricing

Your party will have an entire ice rink for your event, and we limit groups to 48 participants to make sure everyone has a chance to play.

The price for a private event costs $800. This primarily goes to the arena to pay for ice rental. The rest goes to Cedar Rapids Curling, which is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization. All of our instructors are volunteers. We use funds raised from private events to maintain equipment and teach and promote the sport of curling throughout eastern Iowa.

Food and beverage are available through ImOn Ice at an additional cost.

There may be opportunities to accommodate smaller groups for a reduced price if you are willing to share the ice with another group. However, we can’t promise this will always be possible. Fill out the form to start a discussion.

For groups smaller than 10, you may want to consider joining one of our scheduled Learn to Curl events. All spots must be reserved in advance.

What to expect

When you arrive, you will complete short paperwork and pay the instructional fee. We’ll start the session with a quick off-ice discussion about the basics of curling, safety, and etiquette. Then you’ll head onto the ice to learn how to throw and sweep the stone. Finally, we’ll put it all together by playing a short game. Don’t worry, our instructors will be with you all the way, discussing strategy and answering all your questions.

The interactive format fosters:

  • Communication skills
  • Self-confidence
  • Trust
  • Team building
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Leadership
  • Improved morale

Positive interpersonal relationships and successful organizational teams are best built by having fun while facing challenges that are overcome when everyone contributes to the common goal.

What to bring

Cedar Rapids Curling provides all the necessary curling equipment, but you will be on ice and the air temperature usually is in the 40s. Dress in warm, loose-fitting clothing (tight jeans will hinder movement). You may want to shed a layer once you start playing. Many participants are more comfortable wearing gloves or mittens and a hat.

Bring a separate pair of athletic shoes, whose soles are clean of any rocks, dirt, gum, grass, etc., to wear on the ice (no heels, open toed shoes, dress shoes, boots, slippers, loafers, or any footwear with a hard sole). Do not wear these shoes to the arena, as you they will pick up the previously mentioned rocks, dirt, gum, grass, etc. from the outside.

Don’t forget to bring a sense of humor!

Physical and age requirements

Cedar Rapids Curling will find a way for any interested person who can safely be on the ice to participate when their physical abilities do not allow for typical curling styles and techniques. We have special stone delivery devices for those who may not be able to comfortably crouch down to deliver (throw) stones and we can accommodate individuals with more significant physical limitations. Contact us with questions about your particular circumstances if you have concerns; we almost certainly will be able to accommodate.

Those younger than 18 require a consent form to be signed by a legal parent or guardian. Under 15 must be accompanied on the ice by a parent or guardian, unless other arrangements have been agreed upon. If a parent or legal guardian is not able to attend, please print and sign the Cedar Rapids Curling Waiver.
