Newsletter - February 2023

Hello!

We are in the thick of curling season, but there are some exciting opportunities to curl right here in Cedar Rapids coming up in the spring and summer!

Cedar Rapids hosting arena funspiel, MCA Arena National Playdowns

Cedar Rapids Curling will host a casual, fun bonspiel with our fellow MCA arena clubs, St. Louis and Des Moines, May 13-14 in Cedar Rapids. This casual spiel will be a great way for new and experienced curlers to meet and play each other.

The fee will be $35/curler. Participants are responsible for food and beverage costs. Pins will be awarded to the winners and runners-up of the four events.

You can sign up as an individual or as a team.

The deadline to register is April 22.

Alongside the funspiel that weekend in Cedar Rapids will be the MCA Arena National Playdowns. The winners -- one women's team and one men's team -- will represent the Midwest Curling Association at the 2023 Arena National Championships in November (dates and location TBA).

Requirements:

  • Non-mixed event: men's and women's teams
  • Players must be a resident of the U.S. as of deadline
  • All team members must be dues-paying, league-playing members of the same MCA club
  • All team members must be USAC members (FYI: if you are a CRC member, you are a USAC member)
  • $100 USA Curling fee + $25 MCA fee per player

The deadline to register is April 15.

We encourage ALL CRC members to consider giving Nationals a try. You don't need to be a really experienced curler. We've had members who had only been curling a year compete in this competition. It's a wonderful way to meet and learn from fellow arena curlers from across the country!

CRC merchandise now available to buy online

If you're wishing you had a few more Cedar Rapids Curling-branded items in your wardrobe, we have you covered. We have opened a CRC merchandise store within the members-only part of the website. You can find it in the Member Menu under CRC Merch.

The items offered are what we have in our own stock. These are the shirts/socks that you see us selling during Learn-to-Curls and other public events.

We are NOT shipping at this time. Anything you buy, you must pick up at league or another CRC event.

Please excuse any hiccups in this process. We are still working out bugs for how to make this easy for everyone involved. If you have any questions, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Help high schoolers learn physics through curling

A group of Clear Creek Amana High Schools students will be using curling to learn physics concepts from 9 a.m. to noon March 9 at the arena.

We are looking for volunteers to help set up and assist during the demonstrations. We're really excited about this partnership and hope you all can help us make it a great event!

Want to be a certified curling official?

The Midwest Curling Association is hosting a Level I & II Officiating Course March 25 and 26 at the Exmoor Curling Club in Highland Park, IL. Officials are the people you don't see very often on TV during curling, except for the occasional measurement, and the people who post the scores. They are also Timers, Timing Supervisors, End Observers, and On-Ice Officials.

People who complete the courses can officiate at curling events such as playdowns, qualifiers, and U.S. national championships.  Those who wish to take officiating further could potentially officiate at World Championships and the Olympics.

The Level I Course ($25) is a 4-hour course focused on time clock operation with rules discussion presented in the classroom. The Level II Course ($30) is an 8-hour course focused on rule interpretation and on-ice time to learn the process and procedures of different measures conducted during games.

Before you take the Level I & II Officiating courses, you must complete two free pre-requisite online courses (Rules of Curling and Rules of Competition, and Time Clock Operator). Find more information about them here. If you plan to take the Level I & II courses, give yourself enough time to complete the pre-requisite online courses before March 25.

Find more information about the officiating courses and register here.
